Measures to reduce CO2

Innovation on the approach  Measures to reduce CO2

Our environmental strategy is based on the four pillars of technological progress, operational measures, efficient infrastructure and economic instruments.

Technological progress

Technological progress directly reduces CO2 emissions. Thus, for instance, replacing the Airbus A330-200 fleet with the new A330-300 models reduces kerosene consumption by 13 percent per passenger. From 2014, our European fleet (Avro RJ) will be replaced by Bombardier type C series aircraft. New technology (engines, lightweight construction) also reduces kerosene consumption by approx. one-quarter on the predecessor. As the first customer, we promote innovation in aircraft construction.

Operational measures

We save CO2 by flying efficiently. For instance, high-performance flight management systems can help to better utilise high-altitude winds, and systematic loading provides the optimum aerodynamics. When cruising, the speed and flight path are adjusted to the high-altitude winds. And provided the situation allows it, after landing the Airbus A340 the pilots switch off two of the four engines and taxi to their stand position using just two engines.

Efficient infrastructure

Better utilisation of the infrastructure (airspace, airports and air traffic control) can help to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from aviation. Airways are not often efficient today because airspace is more strictly controlled by the rules and regulations of the various countries. Military zones prevent civilian aircraft from flying direct routes.

The European Commission has made it its aim to simplify European airspace (“Single European Sky”).This will help to save up to ten million metric tonnes of CO2 a year – almost three times our entire annual emissions. Switzerland is also taking part in this project, and we are involved in the technical side of its implementation.

Economic instruments

We are committed to a global system for treating aviation emissions that does not distort competition. It rewards active environmental care and facilitates fair global competition. Furthermore, our passengers can commit to individual voluntary compensation for the CO2 emissions they cause hrough «myclimate».
