Complimentary snacks introduced on all flights

25 May 2005

Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 25, the first SWISS flight offering complimentary snacks in economy class will take off from Zurich for Copenhagen. A brief test phase in mid-May confirmed that passengers and crewmembers alike welcome the new product in Swiss Economy.

Economy class passengers who board the Wednesday morning flight to Copenhagen will be served a complimentary snack consisting of a warm chocolate croissant and yoghurt. Coffee, tea and soft drinks will also be available. Among the special features of this new product are seasonal items. In summer economy class passengers on certain flights to destinations in Europe will be able to enjoy Mövenpick premium ice cream; the seasonal treat in winter will be warm cookies.

Sandwich, turnover and ice cream
The new catering product is a key element in SWISS's new quality drive. It is intended to strengthen the airline's positioning as a quality carrier. In Nestlé, SWISS has chosen a strong, experienced partner for this new product.

According to the time of day and duration of the flight, passengers in Swiss Economy will be offered a selection of warm or cold snacks and beverages. On a short flight to Amsterdam there will be a variety of sandwiches, whereas on a longer flight to Madrid a warm calzone (pastry turnover) will be served.

Test phase and reactions
Between the announcement of the new product at the end of April and its introduction on May 25, the SWISS team in charge of the project had very little time to prepare for its implementation. The concept underwent a two-day test in mid-May on 24 flights to 12 European destinations, which provided convincing results, according to Sarah Klatt-Walsh, head of Product Development: “We had an overwhelmingly positive response from SWISS passengers and crew. We are now looking forward optimistically and with great expectations to the introduction.“

Further testing will carry on for some time to come as SWISS strives to offer economy class passengers optimum service and live up to its reputation as a quality airline. The product selection will therefore be constantly developed and refined.
