SWISS names new Head of Human Resources

02 December 2009

Reto Schmid, currently Head of External Affairs & General Counsel, is to assume the position of Head of Human Resources at Swiss International Air Lines. Present HR head Antonio Schulthess will now be responsible for the company’s political, environmental and external affairs.

SWISS’s current Head of Human Resources Antonio Schulthess and Head of External Affairs & General Counsel Reto Schmid are to exchange some of their core functions. The moves form part of SWISS’s broader management development activities: both executives have successfully led and further developed their units over the past few years, and such inter-unit exchanges of functions and authorities should be more common at SWISS in future.

CEO Harry Hohmeister expects exchanges of this kind to help further strengthen and specifically develop the SWISS management team. “As a company, we can never and will never be content with what we have already achieved,” he explains. “Constant further development is a crucial factor in our success – of our product, of our services, and especially of our people. And this applies in particular to our management levels.”

The new portfolios in brief
Antonio Schulthess (44) will serve as Head of External Affairs & IT, assuming additional responsibility for Political & Environmental Affairs and for External Relations (Star Alliance and other airline partnerships). Schulthess is currently in charge of the company’s Human Resources division. His new responsibilities reflect the increasing strategic importance of political and environmental concerns to SWISS and its business. Schulthess will also remain responsible for the company’s Information Technology (IT).

Reto Schmid (43) becomes Head of Human Resources, in overall charge of the HR affairs of all SWISS personnel. He also assumes responsibility for the company’s Internal Audit department. Schmid further retains his function as General Counsel, and will continue to head the company’s Legal Affairs unit.
