11 November 2010

Bruno Gehrig has been elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of Swiss International Air Lines Ltd., upon the recommendation of the Swiss Air Transport Foundation. He succeeds Rolf P. Jetzer, who died in September.

Bruno Gehrig, Chairman of the Swiss Air Transport Foundation, was appointed to the Board of Directors of Swiss International Air Lines Ltd. (SWISS) today, and was subsequently elected Chairman of the Board by his fellow board members. Gehrig’s appointment follows a corresponding recommendation by his fellow trustees on the Swiss Air Transport Foundation, which is entitled to propose a new candidate for appointment to the SWISS Board of Directors in the event of a vacancy thereon. His appointment has the full support of SWISS and Lufthansa. The vacancy arose following the death in September of former Board Chairman Rolf P. Jetzer.

“Bruno Gehrig is a highly-respected Swiss personality with a proven track record,” says Claudio Generali, Deputy Chairman of the Swiss Air Transport Foundation. “He has also gained a valuable insight into the relevant issues within the air transport sector over the past few years. As such, he is ideally qualified for his new function at SWISS.”

Professor Bruno Gehrig is Deputy Chairman of the Board of Roche Holding and a member of the Board of Directors of UBS. After serving as a professor at St. Gallen University, he was a member of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank from 1996 to 2003 and Chairman of the Board of Swiss Life Holding from 2003 to 2009.

“I am greatly looking forward to this new challenge,” Bruno Gehrig says. “I have come to know and appreciate SWISS and its management in the course of my work for the Swiss Air Transport Foundation. SWISS has positioned itself extremely successfully and ensured its own effective further development within the Lufthansa Group. At the same time, the company – like the entire airline sector – continues to face major challenges, and I will now be devoting my efforts and energies to helping us meet and master them.”

The further members of the SWISS Board of Directors are Walter Bosch, Christoph Franz, Jacques Aigrain and Stefan Lauer.

Federal Council to appoint new member of the Swiss Air Transport Foundation Following his appointment as Chairman of the SWISS Board of Directors, Bruno Gehrig has stepped down from the Swiss Air Transport Foundation. A new Foundation member will now be appointed by the Swiss Federal Council. The Swiss Air Transport Foundation, which is domiciled in Zug, was established in 2005 for a ten-year period. The object of the Foundation is to monitor and support the development of air transport in Switzerland and the country’s air links, along with SWISS’s integration into the Lufthansa Group. In all these endeavours, the Foundation strives to ensure that Switzerland’s interests are duly represented and considered.

The Swiss Air Transport Foundation’s present trustees are Professor Thomas Bieger, Claudio Generali, Professor Conrad Meyer and Dr. Peter Müller, Director General of the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation.
