You have to be flexible, service-oriented and able to cope with stress for this job. After all, you're responsible for the safety and well-being of the passengers on board.

You prepare the cabin for the flight, provide the service on board and look after the passengers. And if you wish to go on to qualify as a Maître de Cabine, you will be in charge of constantly changing crews. The Maitre de Cabine is responsible for service quality and hospitality, and is a motivator, supervisor and team leader.

Miami, Zurich, Moscow. As a Cabin Crew Member, you will travel the world and experience foreign cultures. Every single working day brings a new destination and new passengers. It's a job that is more varied and diverse than almost any other.

Duties

Requirements

  • Swiss nationality or an EU passport
  • Minimum age: 19 years

  • Very good English and German language skills; French, Italian or Spanish an advantage (language stays recommended)

Step 1: Application
All vacancies are published on the SWISS job market. You can apply to join us as a Cabin Crew Member at any time. Our Recruitment Team checks all the files and makes a pre-selection on the basis of the requirements profile.

Step 2: Assessment
Candidates are invited to an assessment, where you will be asked to complete various tasks and tests. Your language skills will also be tested. If you receive a positive response after the assessment, you will be considered for a training course.

Step 3: Training
The training course for Cabin Crew Member lasts 3 months in total. In the first month, you will learn the theory of service, on-board safety and security, and dealing with medical emergencies. After that you will spend 2 months on our short haul flights, gaining practical experience. You will then complete the final course and receive your diploma.

Step 4: Career
As a Cabin Crew Member, you will find that many doors at SWISS are open to you. If you pass the professional exam for Flight Attendant after two years, you will initiate new colleagues in the tasks on board, or else carry out additional tasks within the company yourself. Those who pass the atptitude test can go on to qualify as a Maître de Cabine and head a constantly changing team.

    No. We generally require a school-leaving certificate followed by an apprenticeship (professional training) or a secondary school certificate (e.g. Matura, Abitur, Baccalauréat, 'A' levels, trade diploma, FMS).

    No. However, their prior knowledge means that candidates who have trained in tourism or hospitality are often at an advantage when training to become a Cabin Crew Member.

    We don't require a particular body mass index, but instead look at each candidate's overall appearance.

    If the assessment is positive, you will be required to undergo the medical flight eligibility examination.

    There are regular assessments for future Crew Members based in Zurich.

    The assessments for future Cabin Crew Members based in Geneva take place as required.

    Base Zurich:
    German and English, both fluent, are the basic requirements for working as a Cabin Crew Member. There is additional remuneration for employees with good French, Italian or Spanish skills.

    Base Geneva:
    French and English, both fluent, are the basic requirement. There is additional remuneration for employees with good German, Italian or Spanish skills.

    General:
    Any other language you can speak will make it easier for you to communicate with our international clientele. You do not have to submit any specific diplomas or certificates. However, we recommend that you hold level B2 for English and A2/B1 for French (Base Zurich), German (Base Geneva), Spanish or Italian.

Training

    Your training will commence by agreement. It takes about 3 months, and consists of the following:

    - 4.5 weeks theory training on subjects such as service, medical and emergency,
    - 2 months' practical instruction on-board,
    - Final course lasting several days, and diploma presentation

    At first we train new Cabin Crew Members for service in Economy and Business Class on short-haul flights. Base Zurich - Training on long-haul aircraft will be given later.

    As a rule, missed training sessions cannot be repeated. It is essential that you attend all your training sessions without gaps. The basic training already counts as working time.

    Your contract will be mailed to you once you have been allocated a training course. All the necessary formalities will be dealt with at the same time and a medical examination arranged. This examination is essential for your employment, and your contract will only be valid if the results are positive.

    SWISS organises and pays for all accommodation and transportation to the hotel while you are on duty.

  2. Are tattoos, piercings and tooth jewellery allowed?

    Visible piercings (including tooth and tongue piercings) are not permitted during working hours, while in uniform or during basic training. Tattoos must be covered by the uniform (skirt for ladies). We do not permit them to be covered by make-up or plasters.

    The uniform regulations provide all the information in detail.

  4. Do I have to live in or near Zurich or Geneva?

    No. Lots of our staff live in a different canton. However, do bear in mind that flight shifts begin between 5:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. It is possible that public transport might not be running at these times. Long journey times can also place additional stress on the individual. If you are on stand-by duty, you will be required to be at the airport within one hour.

  5. Do female Cabin Crew Members have to wear make-up at work?

    We value a well-groomed appearance. Lipstick must be worn.

  6. What are the downsides of the job?

    The irregular working hours, plus the volume of work can be quite challenging, as can the time differences. Last-minute changes, working on public holidays and at weekends, and trying to accommodate holiday requests all require a certain amount of flexibility.

  7. I have special dietary requirements. Is this compatible with working as a Cabin Crew Member?

    Food intolerances or certain nutritional intolerances may exclude employment. Crews often eat in restaurants, which can make it difficult to keep to a special diet.

  8. When are the Cabin Crews' duty schedules published?

    SWISS publishes the duty schedules on the 24th of the previous month for the following month.

    Basically, everyone can further their career. You can work as an instructor on-board and introduce new colleagues to the job of Cabin Crew members. You can also apply to train for the service in First Class or as a Maître de Cabine on short-haul flights, and commence your training following a successful application.
