Switzerland joins the Schengen visa scheme on 12 December 2008

The European Council has approved the implementation of the Schengen Agreement with Switzerland with effect from 12 December 2008.

From that date, the same rules and regulations will apply for Switzerland as for the other Schengen countries. Foreign UK residents who are presently exempt from requiring a visa to visit Switzerland will need to apply for a Schengen visa if travelling on or after 12 December 2008.
Please note, however, that Swiss visas issued before that date will still be valid (for travelling to Switzerland only) until the date of expiry.

Travellers wishing to apply for a visa must call the Helpline premium rate number 090 6577 1222 to make an appointment before visiting the Embassy’s premises.
