Graubünden

Graubünden  Switzerland’s premier holiday region

Even though the snow has melted, Graubünden continues to be a fantastic destination during the summer time offering a great variety of activities set in this beautiful location. Immerse yourself in the alpine beauty whilst partaking in a range of summer adventures, many of which revolve around the 15,000 km of stunning hiking and biking trails - a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers and just about anyone who enjoys the outdoors. The view of the mountain sun over the evergreen forests, nestled villages and cascading waterfalls has the potential to rival that of the snow covered Alps in winter. Rhaetian Railways are commemorating the 100th jubilee of the Bernina Line throughout the year and Graubünden is also beckoning all culinary high flyers as Andreas Caminadas, Chef of the Year 2010, is whipping up a frenzy with his gastronomic masterpieces. The options are endless in Graubünden this summer!

Hiking
Get back to nature with some of the most exhilarating hikes available in Switzerland and partake in the country’s current ‘it’ activity. Graubünden is represented with two out of a total of 12 hikes. The new ‘Champlönch” children’s path leads right through the middle of untouched nature in Switzerland’s only National Park. Kids will adore this adventure as they are accompanied by delightful virtual guests such as Marmotine the marmot and Tumasch the red deer who appear on your GPS device at regular intervals. The ‘ SendaRuinalta’ trail leads 400 metres high over the Rhine Gorge, from Flims past the turquoise green Cauma Lake to the viewing platform ‘Il Spir’ (The Swift) , where people who don’t suffer from dizziness can go up and “float” above the gorge. In the hiking year 2010 Graubunden is also opening the new Walser trail which follows the traces of the Walser people from San Bernadino (in Graubünden) to Brand (in Austria).

100 years of Rhaetian Railway’s Bernina Line – all aboard!
100 years ago it went into operation: The Bernina Line, the highest-altitude railway link across the Alps operated all year round. Since 2008 it is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage. 61 kilometres of impressive engineering against the backdrop of the highest peak in Graubünden, the Piz Bernina. Direct train traffic between St Moritz and Tirano was started in 1910. Previously a full nine hours were needed to make this journey but now due to the extremely efficient Bernina Line; it only takes two hours by train!

Getting to grips with Graubünden’s uniqueness
Josin Neuhäusler is a perfect master of the old art of ornamenting Engadin houses with Sgraffito. For the curious he offers courses too – this is only one of many bookable activities that bring contact with the locals: from the “Viamala Notte” hike through the Gorge to the culinary outing “From field to table” in the Poschiavo Valley.
Adrenaline junkies can rent a bike in one of the numerous bikeshops and test one of the 4000 km of bike trails – such as the new trail on the Scalottas near Lenzerheide or the (also new) downhill piste on Brambrüesch mountain just outside Chur.
All that fresh air will boost your appetite – and gourmet chefs like Andreas Caminada ( Chef of the Year 2010) as well as the numerous restaurants and chalets down in the valley at up on the mountain will provide a range of culinary treats to excite the taste buds.

Graubünden golf – naturally green

Over 100 years ago in the Engadin the first permanent golf-course in Switzerland was built. “It’s the best course to play badly”, declared an enthusiastic visitor from England. “ If you miss your stroke here, you can still enjoy the view.” This is an evaluation that could indeed go for all of Graubünden’s golf courses. . In Graubünden there are, per head of population, twice as many golf courses as in England, and ten times as many as in Germany! For golfers, the only taxing moment is having to choose which golf course to go to! Someone who – for example – is staying in Davos can choose from ten different courses in a radius of about an hour’s drive - from one of the most comprehensive courses, in Domat/Ems, to one of the highest-altitude golf courses in the Alps, in Arosa. Here the cows help to keep the grass mown.

Family Fun
The range of family trips that are on offer in Graubünden are simply inexhaustible. Madrisaland above Klosters belongs to the biggest playground in the Alps and the naturalist’s trail on Alp Flix is absolutely fascinating. Most of these family activities are included with one overnight stay. The cable-cars in Arosa,Davos Klosters, Samnaun and Savognin take overnight stayers for free up the mountain; also included in the package is the use of local public transport. So parents have to open their wallet only once.
