Travelling with animals

Transported in comfort

With us, you can take your pet with you on any route. It will travel safely and in comfort, either in the cabin or in the cargo section. Book your trip in plenty of time, and make sure you have all the required travel documents.

Documents and definitions

There are different rules and regulations for travelling by air with animals, depending on your destination. So book your travel in plenty of time, and present the original versions of your pet's documents. They include the import, export and transit papers and its health and vaccination certificates. If an animal is not allowed to enter a country because it has not had the required vaccinations, the owner must pay for the return flights. Our Service Center will be pleased to help you with bookings and to answer any questions.

Accommodation in the aircraft

Whether your pet travels in the cabin or in the hold depends on its weight and the size of its transport container. Please note that animals travelling to the following countries can only be transported as freight: Ireland, Great Britain, Kenya, South Africa, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates.

You will find all the information on the accommodation for your four-legged friend during the flight here:

Transport in the cabin (<8 kg)
The following will travel in the cabin
Dogs and cats weighing up to 8 kg (weight including transport container).
Larger dogs with a protective or assistance function (e.g. guide dogs for the visually impaired).

Requirements

You must transport your animal in a soft container that is clean, escape-proof and scratchproof. The container must not be longer, wider or higher than 118 cm (width + height + depth).

There must be enough space in it for the animal, which must remain fully in the container for the entire flight. It is not allowed to run around in the cabin.

Your animal must be clean and healthy, and must not annoy any of the passengers. It must not be dangerous or pregnant, and must not smell.

The container must remain under your seat for the duration of the flight. On the Airbus 330/340, this is not possible in Business or First Class due to the nature of seats . The crew will put the container in the wardrobe, in an overhead locker or under an Economy Class seat for takeoff and landing.

There are no size or weight restrictions for dogs with a protection or assistance function. They travel free in the cabin, and do not have to go in a container.
Transport in the hold (>8 kg)
The following travel in the hold
Animals that weight more than 8 kg (weight including transport container)
Animals whose transport container is bigger than the permitted size (longer, higher or wider than 118 cm)

Requirements
Your pet must be clean, healthy and not dangerous. It must not be pregnant, and must not smell.

It must travel in a suitable container or crate, and must have enough food and water for the entire journey.

The conditions in the hold are similar to those in the cabin. The temperature and air pressure are also pleasant on longer flights. It is not possible to visit the hold during the flight. Check-in with your pet. You should be at our counter at least one hour before the latest check-in time.
Transport as cargo
The following will be transported as freight
Animals that are travelling without a human companion.
Animals travelling to countries where they are required to travel as cargo.

Your animal will also be safe and comfortable if it travels as cargo. Whether it travels on the same flight as you depends on loads. For bookings and if you have any questions, please contact SWISS WorldCargo. For telephone information, please ring +41 44 564 5454.

Charges for transporting animals

The charges for transporting animals will vary, depending on the route. Animals are not included in your baggage allowance, and are always charged as excess baggage. The prices in transport containers refer to flights in the hold or in the cabin.

    Guidelines for transport containers

IATA, the International Air Transport Association, has defined various guidelines for transport containers. For the sake and welfare of the animals, SWISS adheres to these requirements very closely. They define the consistency, appearance and minimum size of transport containers. You must also attach the IATA "Live Animals" label to your container.

Travelling to Switzerland with dogs and cats

If you fly directly to Switzerland, your pet will be checked by Customs at the airport. If the animal fails to meet the entry requirements, it will be confiscated by the Border Veterinary Service and must immediately return to its country of origin. This will be at the expense of the person who brought the animal into the country. If it is not possible to return the animal within 10 days, it will have to be put down. For further information, please refer to the website of the Swiss Federal Veterinary Office.
