Key figures  SWISS takes eco-concerns on board

SWISS has been practicing an eco-minded corporate policy for several years now. While the SWISS fleet consumed an average of 4.5 litres of jet fuel per 100 passenger-kilometres as recently as 2002, that figure had been reduced to 3.8 litres – a reduction of some 16% – by last year. It promotes scientific advances and makes its own material commitments wherever concrete investments are of tangible long-term benefit in ecological terms.

Endeavours of SWISS prosecute these 4 thrusts:

Technological advances - Lower-emmission engines, lighter aircraft, biofuels, ....

Operating measures - Shorter, more direct routings, fuel-saving approach and departure procedures ...

Economic tools - Voluntary carbon offset

Infrastructural efficiencies - Making better use of airspace and airports

CO2 offset - SWISS and myclimate offer voluntary carbon offset.http://swiss.myclimate.org/

Key figures

The specific fuel emissions of Europe’s aviation sector have been reduced by 20%* over the last ten years. The technical possibilities are also far from exhausted. According to the Advisory Council for Aeronautical Research, by 2020 technologies should be available that will permit fuel efficiency to be improved by a further 50%**. Air transport currently accounts for 1.6% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. The aircrafts of the SWISS fleet burn less than 4 l of jet fuel on average for every 100 passenger-kilometres they fly. The air transport sector is striving to further reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
