If the operating airline cancels a flight, it is then unable to fulfil its contractual obligation. If the cancellation is not the fault of the airline, the legal consequences are determined in accordance with Article 19 of Switzerland's Code Of Obligations, under which the airline is released from its obligation to provide transport or pay compensation.
If a flight is cancelled, the passenger is free to withdraw from the contract. The passenger must, however, give the airline the opportuntiy to arrange alternative transport (e.g. via rebooking). At this point, the transport provider has fulfilled its contractual obligation, namely to provide transport.
