Beautiful, proud, historic: Rome is a city that brings its visitors face to face with the issues of the present and the intrigues of the past at every street corner. It’s a multi-layered lasagne of building styles all melted into an exquisite whole, a global tourist magnet in a fabulously hilly location traversed by the snaking River Tiber. No wonder people here tend to be content with what they have, saddling the place in the process with perennial traffic problems. It’s still the finest city in the world, though, with more monuments alone than a dozen of its rivals might muster.
