Per infant: either a baby carry cot or a child seat

Mobility aids such as walking aids, orthopaedic devices and other prostheses, as well as medical equipment

Particular rules apply to the transportation of mobility aids and medical equipment

Non-compliant carry-on baggage

Travelling with less and compliant baggage means shorter queues at security, greater comfort on board and a contribution to your flight's punctuality. For this reason, we check the number, weight and dimensions of carry-on baggage at the airport. Please note that every item brought to the gate counts as carry-on baggage, regardless of your checked baggage allowance.

If your carry-on baggage does not meet the applicable requirements, we check it in at the check-in desk or gate and transport it in the hold. Please note that the fees incurred are higher than for baggage booked in advance, and can only be paid by debit or credit card. The amount depends on your route and ranges from CHF 60.– to 110.– / EUR 60 to 110 / USD 75 to 125.

Carry-on baggage on high-load flights

On high-load flights, limited overhead bin space may mean that some compliant carry-on baggage also needs to be transported in the hold. We notify you of this before your flight by email, giving you the opportunity to check in your compliant carry-on baggage free of charge.

Please remove any valuables, any medication you need during travel, and all battery- or accumulator-powered devices, such as tablets, smartphones, laptops, power banks and e-cigarettes, and bring these into the cabin with you.

Stowing carry-on baggage on board

Clear aisles and well-used overhead bins prevent trip hazards and help boarding run smoothly. Here is how to stow your carry-on baggage:

Large carry-on bags

Large carry-on items such as trolleys should be placed as compactly as possible in the overhead bin above your seat.

Personal items

Personal items such as handbags, shopping bags or laptop bags are best placed under the seat in front of you.

Jackets and coats

Jackets and coats can be hung within easy reach on the coat hook of the seat in front of you.

Please note: The overhead bins above emergency exit rows are reserved for passengers seated in those rows.

On full flights operated with smaller aircraft, you may exceptionally be asked to check in larger carry-on items. These will be returned to you at the aircraft stairs upon disembarkation. This is for your safety and comfort.

Regional specifics and exceptions

Some countries, such as the United States, have stricter carry-on baggage regulations.

On certain regional flights or where country-specific rules apply (e.g. flights departing from India and the United States), guests in SWISS First and SWISS Business may also be required to check in their second carry-on bag.

Please also refer to our list of prohibited and dangerous items. Before you travel, we recommend checking your departure airport's website for local regulations.

Frequently asked questions about carry-on baggage

When travelling with multiple airlines, the carry-on baggage rules of the operating carrier apply to each individual flight. This includes flights operated by another airline under a SWISS flight number (e.g. LX123) – the carry-on baggage rules of the operating carrier apply in these cases too. Before you travel, please check the carry-on baggage rules for each of your flights on the websites of the respective operating carriers and follow the most restrictive rules.

If your carry-on baggage needs to be transported in the hold due to limited overhead bin space, it will be tagged with a baggage label beforehand, just like checked baggage. At your destination airport, you will collect it at the baggage belt as usual. Please remove any valuables, any medication you need during travel, and all battery- or accumulator-powered devices, such as tablets, smartphones, laptops, power banks and e-cigarettes, before your carry-on baggage is loaded. These can be taken into the cabin in your personal item.

Transportation of dangerous goods in carry-on baggage

For safety reasons, it is forbidden by law to transport certain items in your carry-on baggage. Prohibited items will be confiscated at the airport security check. No exceptions will be made. This also applies to items purchased at the airport prior to departure. SWISS accepts no liability for confiscated items.

That is why it is important that, before your trip, you acquaint yourself thoroughly with the rules and pack correctly. In this way you can avoid any hassle or losses.

In addition to the dangerous goods listed, some other dangerous goods are prohibited for transport for safety reasons.

Liquids in carry-on baggage

The transportation of liquids in carry-on baggage is subject to special legal regulations.

The following regulations apply to all SWISS flights:

  • Containers with liquids and gel-like substances may hold up to 100 ml (maximum capacity must be printed on container).
  • Please note that this rule applies to the maximum capacity printed and not the actual contents.
  • All containers must be transported in one resealable, clear plastic bag per person, the bag having a maximum capacity of 1 litre.

What is considered liquid in carry-on baggage?

Liquids include pastes, lotions, mixtures of liquids and solids, as well as the contents of pressure containers, such as toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrup, perfume, shaving foam and other items with a similar consistency, as well as sprays, aerosols and gels.

What exceptions are there?

Medication You are permitted to take urgently required medication in liquid form on board with you. You may only take the amount that you will require during the flight. We suggest that you carry a medical certificate for such medication in English with you. Special foods Passengers travelling with small children may carry milk and liquid baby food in their carry-on baggage. Liquid foods for passengers with allergies (lactose or gluten intolerance) may also be carried in their carry-on baggage. Duty free items

On connecting flights via an EU airport, liquid Duty Free items purchased at an international airport or on board an aircraft outside the EU must be transported in a sealed security bag provided at the point of purchase. The sales receipt must be enclosed in the bag.

Passengers with a connecting flight within the USA must stow these liquid Duty Free items in their checked and registered baggage after landing in the USA.

Items and containers that do not adhere to the dimensions may not be taken on board in carry-on baggage and will be disposed of at airport security.

The regulations are statutory requirements. The local interpretation is the responsibility of the relevant authorities. SWISS has no influence in this regard.

Before your flight, please also check on the website of your departure airport which local regulations apply.
