Partnership agreement between Lufthansa, SWISS and SIA

Airlines forge extensive partnership involving JV on key routes

Partnership agreement

Lufthansa Group including its subsidiary Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) and Singapore Airlines (SIA) have signed a wide-ranging partnership agreement* that will see the two airline groups operating key routes between Singapore and Europe on a joint-venture basis, in addition to significantly expanding codeshare ties and deepening commercial co-operation.
Flights between Singapore and Zurich as well as flights between Singapore and both Frankfurt and Munich, are to be operated under revenue-sharing arrangements. New SIA-operated flights between Singapore and Düsseldorf, which are to be launched in July 2016, will also be covered under such arrangements.
The two airline groups also intend to co-operate in key markets in Europe, Southeast Asia and Australia, co-ordinating schedules to provide customers more convenient connections between route networks, offering joint fare promotions, aligning corporate programmes to strengthen the proposition to corporate customers, and exploring enhancements to existing frequent-flyer programme ties.
In addition to SIA and Lufthansa, the agreement includes SIA subsidiary SilkAir, and Lufthansa subsidiary Austrian Airlines. The expanded codeshare ties** will provide SIA customers with convenient access to and from points in Austria, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland, via the transfer hubs of Zurich, Frankfurt and Munich, with more than 20 new codeshare routes. Lufthansa and Swiss will in turn codeshare with SIA and regional arm SilkAir on more routes serving destinations in Southeast Asia and the Southwest Pacific. Codeshare co-operation is expected to be expanded to more destinations in future.
Some of the benefits of the agreement will be introduced in the coming months, such as the new codeshare services. Other elements of the agreement that require additional levels of regulatory approval may be implemented progressively through 2016.
“We are very pleased to have reached agreement for this extensive partnership, which will bring about significant benefits to consumers through enhanced connections and more codeshare destinations. Singapore Airlines has had longstanding ties to Lufthansa, which is an ideal partner with an excellent network and strong customer focus. This agreement deepens ties with the wider Lufthansa Group, providing a solid foundation for numerous commercial co-operation opportunities,” said Singapore Airlines CEO Mr Goh Choon Phong. “This is yet another example of how partnerships can result in more for our customers, as we can jointly provide benefits that we would otherwise not be able to provide on our own.”
Added Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board & CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG: “We can look back already on a long and fruitful partnership with Singapore Airlines. And we’re now intensifying this close collaboration between two world-leading premium air carriers with a new joint venture that is in the best interests of all our customers, in Europe and in Southeast Asia. Because by working even closer together, we can both offer even better connections and even better services.” Spohr continues: “Our intensified partnership with Singapore Airlines is an excellent addition to our global joint venture network, and is a cornerstone of our Asia strategy. And all these strategic partnerships will help the Lufthansa Group further consolidate its leading position in all key markets.”

*Elements of the agreement are subject to approval in various jurisdictions.
**SIA currently codeshares on: Lufthansa-operated flights between Singapore and Frankfurt, and beyond Frankfurt to 26 intra-Europe destinations; and Swiss-operated flights beyond Zurich to five intra-Europe destinations. Lufthansa currently codeshares on SIA-operated flights between Frankfurt and Singapore, and beyond Singapore to seven points in Southwest Pacific. Swiss currently codeshares on SIA-operated flights between Zurich and Singapore, and beyond Singapore to Bangkok.

SWISS becomes official airline of Swiss-Ski

Official Airline of Swiss-Ski

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) is to support the Swiss-Ski association with immediate effect, providing a comprehensive range of air travel services for the association’s international World Cup and FIS competition events outside Switzerland in all eleven of its winter sports disciplines. As the new Swiss-Ski partner, for instance, SWISS will fly the members of the Swiss national skiing and snowboarding teams from Zurich to their World Cup events all over the globe.
“As The Airline of Switzerland, we are particularly keen to support winter sports, which are one of people’s favourite leisure-time activities in our home country,” says Markus Binkert, SWISS’s Chief Commercial Officer. “So we’re very proud that we will now be conveying and otherwise supporting our Swiss national skiing and snowboarding teams in their training and their major competitions abroad. And as a passionate skier myself, I’m especially delighted at this new team-up between Swiss-Ski and SWISS.”
“We are very pleased to have secured such an attractive and appropriate partner as SWISS just before our new season begins,” adds Urs Lehmann, the President of Swiss-Ski. “Our 300-odd athletes and 150 support staff in our eleven winter sports disciplines will be travelling all over the world throughout the coming season. So it’s all the more vital that we can rely on a partner who offers us the kind of strong service culture which perfectly complements the performance of our teams.”

SWISS’s new partnership with Swiss-Ski has been initially concluded until the end of April 2018.
