Economic sustainability

SWISS is Switzerland’s biggest airline. From Zurich and Geneva international airports, it connects Switzerland to Europe and the world. Swiss WorldCargo, its freight division, has a comprehensive airport-to-airport service offering for high-quality, time-sensitive and high maintenance freight. SWISS must operate profitably on a sustainable basis to be able to fulfil this role in the long term.

In 2022, SWISS served more than 100 destinations in 50 countries worldwide from Zurich and Geneva. With a fleet of 87 aircraft, SWISS carried almost 13 million passengers in 2022.

One in three holidaymakers travels to Switzerland by plane, and local companies export around a third of their value-added exports by air. In a globalised world, SWISS has a shared responsibility to ensure that Switzerland remains an attractive place of work, education and research as well as a popular holiday destination.

SWISS is also an important factor in the labour market. In Switzerland, around 190,000 jobs are associated with aviation. When SWISS adds a long-haul destination to its route network, it generates more than 300 jobs. If the same thing happens with a foreign airline, the number of new jobs in Switzerland is negligible.

SWISS must operate profitably on a sustainable basis to create value for all stakeholders. This makes it possible to invest billions in new and more efficient aircraft types, which in turn guarantees Switzerland’s connection to the world.
