If you're in San Francisco and looking for a good Italian restaurant, the Trattoria Pinocchio is a great choice. The food is good and the staff are very attentive. It's also reasonably priced: Starters (bruschetta for example) cost about 9 Dollars, pasta and pizza cost about 16 Dollars. The Trattoria's selection of wines is also impressive.

My tip for San Francisco is what is without doubt the most special restaurant I know. The Stinking Rose. And although the recipe for its success is simple, it is definitely only for die-hard garlic enthusiasts: the restaurant, which is close to Chinatown, seasons its dishes with more than 3000 pounds of garlic – each month. The Stinking Rose serves garlic dishes: from starters to main courses to desserts. Even the cocktails are garlicky – instead of a Bloody Mary, there’s a Vampire Mary. Simply brilliant! An absolute must for any garlic-lover – and no need to worry: peppermint sweets are served at the end to freshen your breath.

The Columbus Cafe is a good and reasonably priced establishment in a top location. It is situated directly on Lombard Street. The cafe is charmingly furnished and has a very friendly atmosphere. If you fancy a snack there's bagels, sandwiches, focaccia, salad – all at moderate prices. The recommended place to go if you're looking for American flair. And free wifi too!

There are no conveyor belts here, instead boats travel along a little river to bring freshly prepared sushi, sashimi, etc., to the diners. In terms of quality, I am sure there are better sushi restaurants in San Francisco, but the boat thing is a unique experience, and well worth the visit.

Whenever I am in San Francisco, I eat at Bun Mee on Market Street. It always reminds me of my travels to Hanoi, Vietnam, when I often enjoyed delicious French-inspired food. The word «bun mee» is inspired by the Vietnamese word for bread, and you definitely feel the Vietnamese background of the restaurant: inside, with the open busy kitchen as well as the light bulbs and their wires, you feel like you are in the middle of a Vietnamese street. Luckily. Like in the busy streets of Hanoi, you can either enjoy your food «to go», outside watching the busy street or in the restaurant as self-service. Make sure you try the five-spice chicken salad: it’s super delicious!

Finding good coffee in the USA is not easy. Places often serve a weak, fairly tasteless filter coffee and the Starbucks alternative isn't very exciting either. On my quest for a good cup of coffee, I ended up in San Francisco's very laid-back and original Café Sightglass. The purist timber building is home to a huge coffee roaster and each coffee is lovingly brewed by hand. A range of different coffees are on offer and customers can choose between a hand-brewed cup or one from the machine. This is a wonderful place to sit back, relax and watch the busy world go by.

The Napa Valley is highly recommendable as a day trip for gourmets who want to enjoy something outside San Francisco. The valley is a wonderful wine-growing region around 1 ½ hours from the city. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate, the Napa Valley produces wines that are some of the world's best. There is a myriad of vineyards that offer wine tasting. The visitor centre in the beautiful town of Napa provides a map showing all the wineries. My favourite is Pine Ridge Vineyards. The interesting tour, which lasts around two hours, includes a visit to the vineyards, the wine caves and a tasting of the best wines that Pine Ridge produces.
