The city lies at the heart of Slovenia, embedded between the Alps and the Adriatic. The lifestyle is calm and unhurried. Mediterannean-style “dolce vita” meets the dry wit and groundedness of neighbouring Austria.

The people of Ljubljana are proud of their city's history and of the still-young independence of their land. You can see and feel that on every corner. Ljubljana is something of an insiders' tip for city travellers.

The Slovenian capital is of a manageable size. The city centre with the main sights is easily explored on foot. Life there and the locals are extremely European in spirit, and German, Italian and English are spoken. Visitors will find dishes ranging from pizza to Viennese schnitzel and Serbian cevapcici on the menus. Bathing in the Adriatic or a ski trip to Maribor are an easy day's excursion from Ljubljana.

Prešeren Square is the heart of the city. This is where the sightseeing tours start, and the Tourist Centre provides visitors with free maps of the city. The Triple Bridge spans the Ljubljanica River like a fan. There are lots of little restaurant and bars beside the river that are perfect for relaxing. The city's best-known sight is Ljubljana Castle on Castle Hill. In Tivoli Park, roller-bladers meet families and dog owners, and it's only a short walk to the zoo.
