District 1 contains almost everything that has made Vienna famous: the Hofburg Imperial Palace and the Butterfly House; the Town Hall and Parliament; the Opera and Albertina.

It is also where the famous shopping streets and the historic coffee houses are. However, there is also plenty going on around the “Inner City”, especially in District 2 (Leopoldstadt) on the other side of the Danube Canal, and the Carmelite Market is considered an up-and-coming trendy district. The Skopik & Lohn is one particular SWISS TIP for this district; it is an urban establishment that serves a highly imaginative yet uncomplicated cuisine.

A number of small designer and fashion stores, pretty cafés and interesting galleries have opened in Districts 6 (Mariahilf) and 7 (Neubau). Vienna is a city that is full of contrasts. You can be taken back in time to the Imperial heyday of beautiful Schönbrunn Palace or the Vienna Hofburg; relax over the newspapers and challenging literature in any of the numerous coffee houses, devote yourself entirely to its art and culture, or explore the trendy shops and cool bars in the burgeoning “in” quarters and meet interesting people.
