Rio de Janeiro

Some people immediately fall in love with this enamouring Brazilian city. The magic here is intoxicating – beaches and sun, joie de vivre, dancing, laughter, drinking... Welcome to Rio!

Of course, favelas and the urban jungle are all part of the parcel. But so, too, are imposing buildings dating back to colonial times, undisturbed rain forests, and – it goes without saying – the city's landmark, the Cristo de Redentor, with outstretched arms, towering down on the city from the Corcovado. The view from this plateau is simply mind-blowing.

The cariocas, as the locals are called, are bubbly people who radiate an unparalleled joie de vivre. Samba, surfing and sun – this is what life's all about!

Visiting a peaceful favela is the best way to take in the true carioca culture. These residential districts are worlds apart from the shopping centres in Barra de Tajiu and the hip clubs at Ipanema beach. A holiday in Rio without culture and without the beach is like the Copacabana without a caipirinha. And because caipirinhas always taste so good here, it's very difficult to resist Rio.
