The capital is 1600 m above sea level, and the climate is mild all year round. Most visitors go to Kenya’s beaches or straight to its famous national parks, but it’s well worth a visit if you’re on a long stopover.

The city is one of Africa’s burgeoning metropolises, and has a population of over 3 million. However, as well as having a prosperous business quarter and extensive residential areas, the city is also extremely green with a number of parks and gardens. Kenya is famous for its variety of wildlife, which extends all the way into the capital.

The Elephant Orphanage, Giraffe Centre and Snake Park, where the animals can be experienced up close, are all popular with visitors. The Nairobi National Park is right next to the city, its animals offering surrealist photo motifs against the urban skyline.

It’s best to take a taxi or minibus to travel around within Nairobi. The many markets and numerous little shops offer a wide range of souvenirs. Haggling is compulsory. In the evenings, you can explore Nairobi’s nightlife. There are numerous bars and clubs with fine beers and hot beats from all over Africa.
