Muscat is the capital of Oman and rich in history and culture. It is one of the most important cities in the Old Orient and lies in the north-eastern part of the country on the Gulf of Oman. The natural harbour is one of the largest in the world, predestined to serve as a transhipment point for goods from Arabia, India and Europe.

Muscat means «falling place», because the city is separated from its hinterland by rough mountain slopes. Today more than 800,000 people live in the Greater Muscat Area, which includes various neighbouring cities, such as Ruwi and Matrah. Matrah is home to an authentic Oriental market and has many historical buildings, gardens, monuments and one-of-a-kind businesses.

A long coastal road connects Matrah to Muscat and is ideal for extended walks along the seaside. Oman is ruled by Sultan Qaboos, who ordered the construction of the largest mosque in the world. The highest minaret reaches more than 90 metres. The Sultan's Palace is another remarkable building and a popular photo motif. The two forts at the end of the bay which protect the harbour are also interesting sights to see. The Oriental city features many luxury hotels, shopping centres and, naturally, wonderful sandy beaches for relaxing getaways.
