    • Aprazível

      A family recipe
The Aprazível is located in the quiet district of Santa Teresa, in the hilly part of Rio de Janeiro, from where there's a magnificent view of the city. Ana Castilho, the restaurant owner, concocts unique dishes by adapting her family's recipes with innovative ingredients. She uses organic, environmentally farmed products. The wine list has also been compiled with a focus on naturally grown wines, free from the use of chemicals.

    • Olympe

The Restaurant Olympe, run by Claude and Thomas Troisgros, is located at the Botanic Garden in the south of Rio. This is where the French art of cooking comes together with Brazilian ingredients in a range of creative dishes. Their menu revolves around local, seasonal produce, which is always delivered fresh from small, sustainable farmers.

      Fine wines
This wine cellar with adjoining restaurant is simply stunning and serves a range of wines to go with every dish. The beautifully presented fish dishes come highly recommended. The restaurant is modern and cosy, with tables also available outside. This shop-cum-bistro is a wonderful place to unwind at leisure.

    • Churrascaria Palace

      Traditional steakhouse
The Churrascaria Palace is probably the most traditional steakhouse in Rio – and entertainment dining at its best. The restaurant's legendary waiting staff come to the table and serve the food straight away. There are cheese rolls, manioc fries and sausages for starters. A little tip: don't tuck in too much to begin with. Make sure you save your appetite for the excellent meat, which comes later. It's a favourite place with locals

    • Confeitaria Colombo

      A testimony to colonial times
The pretty Art Nouveau-style café with large mirrors adorning the walls was opened in 1894 and is one of the most beautiful coffee houses in Rio. It is located at the heart of the historic Old Town. The décor is reminiscent of Portuguese colonial times and shows signs of European influence – the floor tiles come from Portugal, the china from France and the marble tables from Italy. No one comes away from here hungry – choosing from the extensive range of dishes on the menu is no easy task! There are sandwiches, cheese specials, traditional pork stews and pastries to go with coffee.

    • Rio Scenarium

      Samba at its best
The Rio Scenarium is a club, restaurant and antique dealer all rolled into one. The establishment is spaciously laid out over three different floors. This is a techno-free zone, exclusively reserved for samba. And not any old samba either – this place pulls a crowd with samba from the crème de la crème of Brazil's music scene. And those who don’t want to dance can simply sit back and relax with a chilled drink and enjoy the artistic setting.

    • Empório

      Nineties' rock
The Empório is located in a perpendicular street to Ipanema beach and is the perfect place to meet up before heading out for a night of partying. The great drinks in the bar can be enjoyed to the sounds of 90s' rock. The two-storey bar attracts both locals and tourists, but if it gets too packed, the party simply spills out onto the pavement.

    • The Salgueiro Samba School

      Where dancers come together
Preparations for the carnival begin in the autumn in the samba school, where the dances and carnival song are practised every weekend. However, there's more to this place than hard training. This hall in the north of Rio is also a great place for locals to meet up for a dance and enjoy a caipirinha.

    • Caverna

      A break from Latin rhythms
Anyone who fancies a rock bar in Rio has come to the right place here. The Caverna is known for its good music, burgers, cocktails and beer. At the heart of the Botafogo district, this bar has an unmistakably American feel to it. And when 'Highway to Hell' is blaring out, anyone who wants a break from samba and all things Latin American will feel right at home here among the numerous neon signs.
