    • Pali Village Café

      Mediterranean cuisine
Only insiders know about (and can find) this eatery in the hip Bandra district. Unprepossessing on the outside, it is a great spot to stop for coffee or a light lunch; in the evenings guest dine by candlelight to the strains of nostalgic music. Dishes are Mediterranean, with the grilled giant prawns from the Arabian Sea holding pride of place. The wine selection is more than adequate, and there is the choice of a patio without air conditioning, a cool inside room and a tiny gallery.

    • Trishna

      For fish lovers
Anyone who loves fish will adore this restaurant. It is old, historic, intimate, very cosy and unpretentious. Business people, tourists and celebrities queue for a place at the long wooden tables and order the best and biggest butter, pepper and garlic crayfish in town. Other highlights on the menu include pomfret grilled with black pepper and giant prawns cooked with mint. An ideal accompaniment is an Indian chardonnay from the Sula vineyards. With food like this, it’s easy to turn a blind eye to the occasional grumpiness of the waiters.

    • Britannia

      Popular classic
Wonderfully nostalgic family restaurant that opens onto the street. Granted, the paint is peeling off the walls and the furniture has seen better days, but for decades its unchanging specialities seem to have grown better and better all the time, and are a powerful magnet at lunchtime for staff from the various embassies in the neighbourhood. Its bestsellers include the Iranian berry pulao, fish patra simmered in the oven with spicy chutney, fantastic crème caramel and homemade lemonade.

    • Indigo

      The «in» place to be
This restaurant is so cool that it could easily be in London or New York. Although it is now nearly ten years old, it is still the most fashionable meeting place for the local smart set. The cuisine is Italian-Mediterranean, which can be a blessing for visitors who are occasionally in need of less spicy fare. Those in the know start their evening with a Kingfisher beer or a cocktail at the bar before moving on to their table (booking essential!) either inside the cosy dining room or, weather permitting, on the romantic roof terrace.

    • Café Mondegar

      Popular around the clock
During the day, the Mondegar is a neat little café that also serves good food. In the evenings, when the music is turned up and the lights are turned down, guests stand in line at the door waiting for a table. Its strategic location, friendly and uncomplicated atmosphere, attractive prices and good mix of local and foreign customers have made it a popular destination for years, particularly among younger folk and travellers. It’s fun to sit with a cold beer and watch the scene unfold, and easy to strike up a conversation with the people at the next table.

    • Café Basilico

      A cappuccino break
If you don’t happen to arrive just at midday, when employees from the surrounding galleries and offices are tucking into their power lunches, this is a veritable oasis of tranquillity. Cool and chic, with jazz playing gently in the background, the Basilico serves good Italian cuisine and a decent cappuccino, but also a delicious cheesecake and various types of tea. Housed in a pretty colonial building in the middle of the Colaba neighbourhood, it is the perfect place for a break from scouring the shops and galleries round about. A few tables are set up outside when the weather is good.

    • Indigo Deli

      Breakfast meeting place
The trendy Indigo restaurant has a younger offshoot that exudes the same level of style, although customers tend to come here for coffee or to lunch on Reuben sandwiches and huge salads. As in any good deli, you can also shop here. It has a good selection of wines, which is by no means a given in Mumbai. It also has European breads, cakes, chocolate and a few genuine delicacies such as olive oil, Parma ham and French cheese. The local in-crowd enjoys coming here for breakfast or a power lunch.

    • Dome InterContinental Hotel

      Chill at sundown
This is the best place to watch the sun set over the Arabian Sea. The urbane bar with its sweeping white armchairs and sofas is located on the roof of the InterContinental hotel, and is a favourite with elegant, well-off Indians, guests of the hotel and tourists who are in the know. It offers outstanding cocktails and tasty snacks, sometimes accompanied by live music played by a fantastic saxophonist. The mood is also good later on in the evening, when there is always a chance of one or the other Bollywood stars popping in with some friends.
