The imperial city of Toledo, approx. 65 km southwest of Madrid, is one of the oldest cities in Europe and home to El Greco’s art. Toledo has been known as a source of weaponry since Roman times. The church of San Tomé, the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes and the Santia María la Blanca synagogue are particularly impressive. The enchanting old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has what is probably Spain’s most impressively furnished cathedral. The quickest way to Toledo is by the Avant train, which departs from the Estacíon de Atocha in Madrid. The journey time is about half an hour. It’s a good idea to book your tickets online (renfe.com), because the trains are always full, and it will save you having to wait at the ticket counter.

The restaurant el cocinillas is situated in the heart of Malasaña. The atmosphere is cosy and the staff are very friendly. There's a small and exquisite selection of foods, with new dishes appearing all the time. The hand-written menu is also charming. And the food really is a treat for the palate.

Cañas y tapas are a must on any visit to Madrid! Madrid is full of cervecerias, small bars where cañas y tapas are served. You order a cañas (beer) and get free tapas with it. The tapas can vary greatly depending on the cerveceria. You simply throw your trash (serviettes, toothpicks etc.) onto the floor. To tell whether a cerveceria is good and popular, check out the amount of trash on the floor. The more trash on the floor, the better the bar. The districts of Chueca and Malasaña are full of such bars.

Mercado de San Miguel is a wonderful old market hall with great stalls and restaurants. The products available here are all of a very high quality. The hall itself is really impressive, and offers plenty of options: it’s somewhere to do your daily shopping; it's a venue for various activities and exhibitions, for product tastings, or somewhere to stop off during a sightseeing tour.
