The fishing village of Marsaxlokk to the south of Malta contains the typical Maltese fishing boats and a few good fish restaurants. The village is only an 11-minute drive from the airport, and is a lovely place to spend the night. The Hotel Harbour Lodge has clean, well-priced rooms. The offers sometimes even include a hire car. The owner will also collect you from the airport at no extra charge.

If you would like to visit the almost 6000-year-old underground temple of Hal Saflieni, the only known temple of its kind in the world, you will have to book several months in advance. However, it does have a small contingency of last-minute tickets for the next day, which are available from the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta. If you are at the museum as the doors open, you have a good chance of being able to buy tickets. Note: one ticket costs a juicy 30 euros.
