  • Clock Tower

    Magical landmark
Something's odd here – but just what? This thought pops into everyone’s head when they stand before the city's landmark, the Clock Tower, on Graz Castle Hill. The answer: the long hand shows the hours, the short hand the minutes. The 28 m high tower – whose core is said to date back to the 13th century – is also very special in every other respect. That's because the views from its base of Graz and the surrounding countryside are simply breathtaking – not to say magical.

  • Landhaushof

    Great for photographs
A piece of North Italian architecture lies at the heart of Graz's Old Town in the form of the "Landhaushof", the Landhaus Courtyard. The design by Italian architect Domenico dell'Allio for this prestigious building is still home to the Styrian regional government today. The wonderful courtyard with arcades and corridors on all three floors and the bronze fountain does sterling duty as a popular subject for photographs. And every year at Advent, the famous Graz nativity scene is created here – from around 50 tonnes of crystal clear ice!

As a traveller, it is good to take time occasionally and just be still. Graz cathedral is the perfect place to enjoy some peace and find inspiration. With its Gothic architecture and Baroque interior, this magnificent sacred building is a haven of devotion. Right next door to it is the mausoleum with the turquoise roof cupola that houses the mortal remains of Emperor Ferdinand II.

  • Charming farmers' markets

The best straight from the farm
The farmers' markets are already a hive of activity before the sun has properly risen above the rooftops of Graz. The region's farmers are busy laying out freshly-harvested and home-made produce on their stands. Juicy apples and bright red tomatoes, fresh flowers, pumpkin seeds, crispy bread, ham and cheese: filling a shopping basket is pure pleasure. With 800 city farmers, Graz has Europe's largest density of market days. The Kaiser Josef Market and the market on the Lendplatz take place every morning except Sundays.

  • Kunsthaus

    «Friendly Alien»
In 2003, Graz's new "Kunsthaus" opened its doors as the architectural conclusion to the city's tenure as European Cultural Capital. Since then, this impressive building – the work of London architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier – in blue acrylic, also called the "Friendly Alien", attracts art and culture-lovers from all over the world. And what's more, it only shows works from the last four decades.

  • Opera and theatre

    Wagner or Strauss
Graz's opera house has a long tradition. It also has an excellent reputation as a stage for performances of Wagner and Richard Strauss, and has launched very many of Austria’s best known artists on their international careers. So why not take in an opera? Or perhaps visit the theatre? In 2012, author Daniel Kehlmann received the Nestroy Theatre Award for "Geister in Princeton" ("Ghosts in Princeton"), which premiered here.
