There is little evidence of an emerging economy in New Delhi – because New Delhi is already at the pinnacle.

The gigantic, hypermodern Terminal 3 at Indira Gandhi airport takes one’s breath away; chauffeurs drive huge luxury cars along the wide boulevards, taking businesspeople from A to B, and the local high society partakes of champagne brunches in the gardens of the grand hotels. Property prices are in the Tokyo bracket, and the windows of the famous jewellers sparkle and glitter in unbeatable splendour.

However, there is also another Delhi. In the Old Town (Old Delhi), ox-drawn carts block the traffic while monkeys tumble and clamber over the roofs of dilapidated old houses, and every few hours the muezzin calls the faithful to prayers. Spicy samosas are deep-fried in minuscule street kitchens; the Indian tea speciality chai is served on every street corner, and carpenters, tailors and dentists work cheek by jowl in tiny shacks that are open to the street.

Two parallel worlds that could not be more different exist side by side in Delhi. And it is these very contrasts, these impressions, that make Delhi so fascinating.
