Nobody knows the SWISS destinations better than our staff. A restaurant that is not listed in every travel guide, an original bar, a charming café, or great tours with spectacular lookout points. Let our travel professionals inspire you with their tips.

The Broadway Playhouse Chicago, a musical theatre that offers excellent entertainment, is just a five-minute walk from the SWISS crew hotel in Chicago. I most recently went to see the musical ‘I Love Lucy, Live on Stage’, a very clever stage version of the much-loved TV programme that was the world’s first sitcom. Sensational! The Broadway Playhouse is constantly staging terrific productions.

Imagine a typical American restaurant, and this would be it! The Miller's Pub has been welcoming customers since 1935 and is considered to be one of Chicago's oldest restaurants. The 15-metre-long bar serves a terrific range of beers, which are the perfect accompaniment to the popular prime rib or spare ribs.

This hotel offers great value for money. The central location by the river means that all major sights can be reached on foot. I would highly recommend booking a room with a view of the impressive skyline, if available.

Café Ba-Ba-Reeba is a great tapas eatery with a tremendous selection (including veggie and gluten-free tapas), served in a cozy atmosphere and with a lovely outside area. The best thing to do is order lots of different tapas, and graze your way through these Spanish delights. Perfect for chatting with friends over a glass of sangria and filling up.

Chicago has a very well developed public transport network – something that shouldn't be taken for granted in the USA. Travellers can buy a Ventra Card from ticket machines for 5 USD, for example, and charge this with money. The whole network can be used for 2.25 dollars for 2 hours (up to 2 extra trips for 25 cents each). A CTA day pass costs 10 dollars, a 3-day pass costs 20 dollars and a 7-day pass costs 28 dollars. The whole system is very easy to use and convenient.

What could be better than a dip in Lake Michigan after a strenuous tour of the city! It seems as big as an ocean – you can’t see the opposite side, although it does have the advantage of not leaving you salty after a swim. There are various sandy beaches along the shores, such as Oak Street Beach, Ohio Street Beach and North Avenue Beach. Oak Street Beach is quite quiet, and has a lovely bistro (Beachstro). North Avenue Beach is always buzzing with sun-worshippers among the volleyball courts, improvised dodgeball courts and Frisbee players. In summer, the beach house – which looks just like an old steamship – is THE place to party. Ohio Street Beach is in a central location, near Navy Pier.

The imposing Chicago skyline can be admired from this bar, while sipping a refreshing cocktail. Hunger pangs can also be kept at bay with oriental-inspired tapas. The best thing about this bar is that a DJ turns it into an exciting club on weekends.

I think Nookies restaurant serves the best burgers in Chicago – and at relatively low prices. There are several branches in Chicago; the one I know is in the charming Old Town quarter – which has the added bonus of being slightly off the beaten track for tourists.

I just love Chicago’s architecture. The best way to appreciate it is on a boat from the river. And for me, no visit to the city is complete without one of its famous deep dish pizzas. My favourite place for that is Lou Malnati’s – great food, great atmosphere and great service!

Nothing can beat the combination of tacos and beer! This modern pub not only serves up delicious tacos, but it also enjoys a prime location in downtown Chicago. The staff always have a smile ready for their customers!
