Fly with SWISS from Dubai to Cairo and experience the capital of Egypt. To the south of the city are the famous tourist destinations: The Great Pyramids and the Sphinx. It makes sense to come here early in the morning when it is not yet too hot and the daily busloads of tourists have not yet arrived.
The ancient Egyptians saw the pyramids as resurrection machines for the mighty Pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. They are the last of the Seven Wonders of antiquity still standing. The city of Cairo itself is a buzzing metropolis along the Nile, the biggest city on the African continent and one of the largest urban sprawls on earth.
Have a stroll around the thousand-year-old city center, and visit the Al-Azhar Mosque, the oldest Mosque in Cairo with its famous University. In Old Cairo, the ancient Christian part of the city, there are still some thousand-year-old Coptic churches to be found. As unavoidable as the pyramids is also the Egyptian Museum that displays the iconic gold mask of the young Pharaoh Tutankhamun. Thousands of artifacts of ancient Egypt can be found in this endless collection, including the mummies of great Pharaohs like Ramses II. Ancient Egyptian history spanned nearly 3000 years, so the number of artifacts left to us is overwhelming.
After a day at the museum, sit down for a coffee in one of the many coffee houses and chat with the friendly locals. After that, visit one of the lively bazaars in the old part of Cairo. Take a tour up and down the Nile along the city and get a different perspective of the endless metropolis. You will find out that it is a great place to be.
