In one way or another, everyone is affected by the heritage of Athenian civilisation. More than 2500 years ago, under the leadership of Pericles, the city experienced a golden age that brought forth the idea of mass democracy, the games of Aeschylus and Aristophanes, the philosophy of Socrates and the temple of Athena known as the Parthenon.
The best views of the most important archaeological sites are offered by the Grand Promenade – a tree-shaded pedestrian path that begins near the Acropolis and leads north to the Monastiraki district. On the way there, it passes through the Dionysus Theatre and the Pnyx – the place where the ancient Athenians gathered to vote.
