Heraklion has seen several civilizations. The church of St. Titus is a good example. Founded under the Byzantine Empire, it was rebuilt by the Venetians. After a time as a mosque, it was rededicated in 1925 as an Orthodox church. In the Archaeological Museum you can see artefacts from the Minoan period of Crete, including the famous bull-leaping fresco.
The city has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The old harbour is home to many fishing boats, and there are many taverns with fresh seafood in the surrounding area. On Löwenplatz there are many cafés serving bougatsa, a kind of puff pastry filled with cream or cheese and marinated in honey.
