Portuguese explorers travelled from the port of Lisbon to America and India. The last thing they saw when they left the port was the Belém Tower. This beautiful building on the promenade is partly gate and partly fortress. Nearby is the Jerónimos Monastery, where Vasco da Gama and his men spent the night in prayer before sailing to India.
The terrible earthquake of 1755 is a turning point in the history of Lisbon. It took a year just to clear the rubble. Then a completely new city was designed. Built on 7 hills, Lisbon has a 100-year-old system of funiculars and elevators, as well as trams winding through steep, winding streets.
