Nice has been an elegant and fashionable place since the 18th century, when wealthy travellers from England began to visit Nice. Today you can still stroll along the Promenade des Anglais - a palm-fringed path by the sea. Later, the light and colour of Nice attracted artists including Matisse and Chagall. The city has museums dedicated to both.
Nice has many markets to discover. The evening arts and crafts market provides a pleasant walk before dinner. There is also a weekly antique market and of course a fruit, vegetable and fish market. Most of them take place at Cours Saleya in the old town, which is full of cafes, music centres and fascinating shops.
