South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg, is located in a very special area in the northeast of the country. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is named ‘The Cradle of Humankind’. Many of the oldest human remains were discovered there. Take a trip from the city to see the Sterkfontein caves and the attractive Maropeng Visitor Centre.
Johannesburg has a growing food scene emphasis on small markets, where you can usually enjoy a meat meal from a proper South African braai (barbecue). If you are touring the Soweto township, you should definitely visit a Shebeen and try one or two local dishes that are often spicy but always big in meat.
