Bangkok is the spiritual heart of Thailand. There are Buddhist temples throughout the city, but two of the most famous are on the island of Rattanakosin.
The Wat Phra Kaew is known for its huge jade statue of Buddha, which is considered by Thais as an important protector. The Wat Pho temple is also on the island. It houses a 46-metre-long reclining Buddha. Temples are an important part of city life. Early in the morning you can see monks collecting donations on the streets. It is common to visit temples to pray or ask for advice. They are also a focus for festivals such as Makha Bucha, in spring, when the King leads a procession at Wat Phra Kaew.
