Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, is dominated by Kalemegdan Fortress, which lies on a prominent hill in the center of the city. From the walls you can see the Danube and Sava rivers and, in the stream of the Danube, the Great War Island.
This is a nature reserve with a small beach, which can only be reached by boat – remember to rent kayaks. The fortress is home to the chapel of St. Petka, a holy place for Orthodox Christians. There are many churches in the whole city. Most impressive is St. Sava’s, built for 10,000 people. The beautiful mosaics in the small church nearby give an idea of what St. Sava will look like when it is finished.
