Florence is the city of Machiavelli and the Medici, Dante and Donatello. It enjoyed a great period of cultural flourishing from the 14th to the 16th century.
Towards the beginning of that period, Giotto painted his famous frescoes of the life of St Francis in Santa Croce, and towards the end, Michelangelo completed his David – now in the Accademia. The view of Florence from the Piazzale Michelangelo is stunning, with the red roofs, the dome of the cathedral, Giotto’s elegant bell tower and the battlements of the Palazzo Vecchio. When all the bells of the city are ringing in the early evening, you could be back in the Florence of the Medici.
