Frankfurt has long been influential on the world stage. Holy Roman Emperors were elected in Frankfurt Cathedral from the mid-14th century, and for two hundred years from the 16th century they were actually crowned there too.
Today, the city’s high-rise skyline – unusual for Europe – bears witness to its importance as a major financial center. Frankfurt has a Christmas market that takes place in the historic Römer district, painstakingly reconstructed after the war. A traditional delicacy called Bethmännchen is always available at the market. It is a pastry made with marzipan and rosewater, irresistible with a glass of spicy glühwein.
