In 1873, the cities of Buda, Óbuda and Pest were merged into one great city straddling the Danube, which became the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Already graced by buildings like the beautiful St. Stephen’s Basilica and the vast Dohány Street Synagogue, Budapest’s imperial golden age added the spectacular parliament building by the river.
People have come from far and wide to visit Budapest since at least Roman times. That is due to its 80 hot springs – the largest underground thermal system in the world. As a result, the city has many ornate and well-preserved spa hotels and baths which are popular with a new generation of tourists.
