There are few cities more historically significant than Istanbul. The last remnant of the Roman Empire, it fell to the Ottomans in the 15th century. From the vast domes of the Blue Mosque and the old Basilica of Hagia Sophia to the gorgeous Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern – a huge subterranean Roman reservoir – this city is breathtaking.
Make sure you visit the Grand Bazaar, an ancient and sprawling covered market. In its maze-like passages you can find carpets, ceramics, metalwork, leather goods and much more. Then, when you are done shopping, take some refreshment in the peaceful surroundings of one of the city’s many tea gardens.
