Málaga lies on Spain’s Costa del Sol or Sun Coast, about 130km north of Africa. Mediterranean civilisation has deep roots here. The walls of a Phoenician city are still visible at the Museo Picasso Málaga, and there is a Roman theatre. Moorish culture also left its mark in the form of the huge Gibralfaro Castle, which defended the city from pirates.
When you are not tanning yourself on Málaga’s beaches or visiting historical sites, you can enjoy some of the best traditional food in Spain. Deep-fried fish is a speciality. Also try the refreshing cold almond soup called ajo blanco. Like many of the city’s buildings, it has Moorish influences.
