Marseille is a cosmopolitan city of more than a million people on France’s Mediterranean coast. A walk around its markets is the best way to discover its cultural richness and the delicious local produce.
When you need a break from the urban bustle, do what the locals do – head out to the Calanques, a rugged area of cliffs, sea inlets and beaches. At the old port, restaurateurs buy fish for their bouillabaisse – the delicious soup for which Marseille is famous. At the Noailles market in the Cours Julien area you can lose yourself among the food stalls or find a café and watch the world go by. At the weekend you will also see antiques.
