After your flight to Athens (ATH), you arrive well rested at the airport, now you are ready to explore the first centre of European culture and its rich heritage. In Athens, birthplace of democracy and philosophy, the most famous place is of course the Sacred Rock of the Athenian Acropolis. The famous buildings of Athens “golden” period are the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. Phidias, the most famous sculptor of the time, teamed up with the architects Ictinus and Callicrates for this, while the elected ruler Pericles footed the bill, mainly with the money of other Greek city states.

In the Acropolis Museum you will find its history recounted and illustrated by more than 3000 artefacts from that period. The lesser known Temple of Hephaistos, the Greek god of volcanos, fire and blacksmiths, is usually less crowded, but at least as interesting. For getting a feel for the Greek classical period, head to the world renowned Archaeological Museum of Athens, which houses the finest antiquities from all over Greece. You may also treat the city as an open-air museum by walking the archaeological path that was conceived in the 19th century. It features the Two Hills, once dedicated to the Nymphs and the Muses, respectively, the Ancient Agora, centre of public life in classical Athens, the Theatre of Dionysus, founded in the 6th century BC, and the Kerameikos, which used to be the ancient Athenians sacred cemetery.

It’s easy to forget that Athens is also a modern day city with its very own attractions. The beautiful neighbourhood of Plaka is worth an exploration. Syntagma square is a very significant area in Athens, because its central location allows you to walk to all the important monument. Three metro entrances enable you to easily travel anywhere further. Have another stroll in Monastiraki, one of the most renowned neighbourhoods in central Athens, because it belongs to the oldest part of the town. It also features its traditional flea market. Don’t forget that you are actually on the coast of the Mediterranean, so hit the beaches for a relaxing day. Here you can also have a night out dancing in the clubs on the Athenian Riviera, the coastline of Athens.
