Flights from London to Mumbai: Start your Indian adventure

Often referred to as the City of Dreams, Mumbai sits on the coast of the gorgeous Arabian Sea. Formerly known as Bombay, the city’s 18 million residents are constantly on the move, working hard in pursuit of their many goals and ambitions. Teeming with colonial history and regional culture, Mumbai truly is the cosmopolitan centre of India.

Whether you’re a first timer in India, or an experienced visitor, Mumbai has plenty to offer. Spectacular monuments, ancient history, exquisite artwork, mouth-watering food and tonnes of nightlife options. Just a selection of the reasons of why you might want to visit. Mumbai is a city that is continuously evolving as it looks to develop itself into a financial powerhouse. Its citizens, despite their hard work ethic, drive and determination, are friendly and welcoming.

The best way to get from the London city centre to Heathrow Airport is by using the Heathrow Express. The journey runs from London Paddington station, stopping at Heathrow Terminals Two, Three and Five (a free shuttle transfer is available for passengers flying from Terminal Four). The whole journey only takes around 20 minutes.

London to Mumbai: Important information to know before you fly

  • Airport to city centre: The easiest and most relaxing, but not necessarily the quickest, way to get out of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is by getting a taxi. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that Mumbai’s traffic is notorious for being for heavy, meaning this journey can often take up to two hours. You can also get the train from the airport to the city, perhaps the recommended method for those looking for a little more adventure. Trains are extremely cheap and run frequently to various parts of the city.
  • The ideal time of the year to visit: The cooler winter months in Mumbai provide the perfect conditions for taking part in outdoor activities or spending the days touring the sites. If you’re willing to brave the heat during the summer months then visitors are often rewarded with unique hotel deals. June to October brings the famous monsoon season. This doesn’t slow the city down though. Public transport will still run as normal and this is also an ideal time to visit some of Mumbai’s famous hill stations.
  • Getting around: Mumbai has an efficient, reliable and cheap railway system that can take you around the majority of the city. It acts as the lifeblood for the city, with four main service lines with more than 120 stops. Google Maps is a good tool to use to help you to identify the correct line and train.

Mumbai’s historical and cultural hotspots

The bustling City of Dreams has so much to offer when it comes to visitor hotspots and attractions:

  • Gateway of India
  • Taj Mahal Palace
  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus

Located on the waterfront in southern Mumbai, the Gateway of India is the perfect place to start your Mumbai adventure. It is popular not only because of the spectacular yet formidable structure, but also because of its historical significance. As the site from which the last British troops left India in 1947, the Gateway acts as a symbol of Indian independence.

A short walk from the Gateway lies the Taj Mahal Palace, another iconic Indian building. Boasting intricate designs and patterns that reflect the historic combination of Islamic design and twentieth century colonial rule, this beautifully designed hotel has also played important roles throughout India’s history.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) is Mumbai’s atmospheric, bustling and hectic main train station. Similarly to the aforementioned sites, its gothic design harks back to the era of colonial rule, together with hints of Islamic and Hindu styles. The atmosphere in and around the station is a great representation of Mumbai’s overall pace and energy.

These and many more spectacular cultural and historic attractions are available to visitors. Book your flight from London to Mumbai to discover them all!
