With your SWISS flight to Wrocław you will touch down in the fourth biggest city of Poland and the capital of Lower Silesia. Wrocław is said to be one of the most beautiful cities of Poland, but is not yet overrun by tourists.
In the thousand years since it was founded the city belonged to Poland, Bohemia, Hungary, Austria, Prussia, Germany and now again to Poland. The citizens restored the medieval inner city with care and love, the colorful facades of the old houses transmit at once a lively feeling and a sense for history. This looks especially nice around the Old Market, even today one of the biggest in Europe. This is the center of Wrocławs historic Old Town and a great place for starting the exploration of the many sights you will find here.
The Gothic style Old Town Hall with the famous astronomical clock from 1580 is one of the main landmarks of Wrocław. In the cellars you can still have a great meal in the „Schweidnitzer Keller“, a restaurant that is operating continuously since 1275. A very new landmark are tiny little bronze statues of dwarfs all over the city, remembering the opposition against the communist regime in the 1980s.
A short walk through quaint alleys will bring you to the university quarter, a center for learning and also the main area for a raunchy nightlife. A famous part of the University is the Aula Leopoldina, a baroque masterpiece of the Austrian Habsburg rulers who were in charge in the early 18th century. Equally impressive is the festive hall Oratorium Marianum.
Move on to the Sand- and the Dome Islands, both in the middle of the Oder River. The mighty cathedral form 1241 on the Dome Island (which has been reconnected to the mainland by filling up one arm of the river) and the Botanical Garden right next to it offer a moment of peace and contemplation. The River, some smaller rivers and many canals were responsible for Wrocławs nickname “Venice of the East”. Taking a boat tour on the River Oder is a great way to see the town from a new perspective.
Many other famous sights are waiting to be explored, the much-needed energy con be provided by Poland’s hearty cuisine. Fascinating is the local beer culture, several smaller and bigger breweries have taken up the task to produce the best beers of Poland. Enjoy your SWISS flight to Wrocław.
