General Information
Alpine magic awaits in Zurich

Zurich is located in the Swiss Plateau on relatively flat terrain from which you can marvel at the majestic beauty of the Swiss Alps framing the lake. Zurich will greet you with awe-inspiring sights and a vibrant cultural atmosphere, as well as some of the finest food and entertainment found anywhere.

Switzerland, and Zurich in particular, are among the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and it’s not hard to see why. Whether you’ve come for summer mountain hiking or swimming in the pristine waters of Lake Zurich, or the winter landscape with its snow-capped peaks and the fluffy powder snow for which Switzerland is known, it’s not difficult to see why it ranks among the top destinations.

Grab a bike and go for a ride through Zurich’s Old Town district (Altstadt) and take in the sights of historic buildings such as the Romanesque-style church, Grossmünster or the Rathaus (town hall). The streets of Zurich are lined with galleries, museums, and other entertainment venues. Kunsthaus Zurüch, the Zurich Opera House, the Rietberg Museum and the Schauspielhaus are awaiting your visit.

If you’re more of the outdoorsy type, a walk up Uetliberg in the Albis Chain is a must. From here, you’ll experience stunningly breathtaking views of the region. As the largest chocolate producing region in the country, Zurich makes a significant contribution to Switzerland’s reputation for legendary confectionery.

How do I get to and from the Zurich airport?

It’s quite simple, really. Zurich offers easily accessible transportation to and from the airport in the form of airport tram, train and shuttle bus services. The airport is located roughly 10 km (6 miles) from the city center and the über-reliable rail service connects the airport to the city with a 15-minute ride that runs every 5-10 minutes. The shuttle bus takes around 40 minutes to make the trip. Zurich uses a unified fare system for your convenience.

What about getting around the rest of the city?

Finding your way around Zurich is a simple and enjoyable experience. Public transport in Zurich is famously quick and efficient. Thanks to the unified fare system, your ticket is valid for use across different forms of transportation, including a well-timed train system, convenient tram service and buses. Cabs are always available too. However, one of the best ways to enjoy your stay in Zurich and getting around town is by renting a bicycle and touring the city at your own pace.

Is it easy to find a place to stay in Zurich?

Yes! You can find a number of hotels and hostels throughout the city to suit any budget. If you’re looking for something grandiose, try the Widder Hotel or the Dolder Grand for some of the finest hotel experiences in Europe. For budget accommodation, try the Ema House Hotel Suite or the Zurich Youth Hostel. There are also convenient and affordable rooms at the Radisson Blu right outside the airport – perfect if you have an early morning departure and want a little extra sleep!

Swiss culinary excellence for every taste

Zurich is an epicenter of fantastic Swiss cuisine. Cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels can be found around nearly every corner. Fact: in the past, Switzerland has laid claim to the 2nd highest number of Michelin stars in the world, many of which can be found in Zurich. Thanks to its diversity, you’ll find food from around the world as well as many traditional dishes.

“Zürcher Zouftschriibertopf”, which loosely translates as “guild writer’s stew”, is one the characteristicly hearty dishes of Zurichs traditional cuisine. It consists of beef, pork and veal filets, bacon, liver and kidney cooked with carrots, peas and potatoes. Other Swiss classics are Raclette, a special cheese that is molten and eaten with potatoes and onions, and the famous cheese fondue, where molten cheese with wine is mopped up with pieces of bread.

Going out in Zurich

As a university town, Zurich has always had plenty of opportunities to go out. During the summer, the locals like to start their wild nights at the public swimming pools of all places: as soon as the sun sets, the so-called “badis” turn into great places to enjoy lakeside drinks. In the city, you will find many nightclubs and hundreds of cozy bars and restaurants that will keep you entertained until the early morning.

Shopping in Zurich

Many of the city’s most prominent shops and boutiques can be found along Langstrasse and the area surrounding Zurich Hauptbahnhof (central train station). Here you will discover a plethora of the finest haute couture fashion, souvenirs, and cafes for between shopping session coffees.

Grieder is a department  store located in the heart of Zurich at Bahnhofstrasse 30 in a Gothic Revival building. Home to some of the world’s most coveted luxury brands, including Stella McCartney, Valentino, Dsquared2 and Fendi, alongside high-end homewares, a beauty salon and the Greiderbar serving an all-day lunch, Greider is a 3000m2 shopper’s paradise.
