So, whether you’re looking for a full-throttle adventure, entertainment, culture or relaxation, immerse yourself in Zurich.

Zurich’s attractions

Sometimes, especially when the time of the trip is short, its hard to decide which are the attraction you have to see. In the following you will find the most popular attractions:

  • Altstadt (Old Town)
  • Üetliberg (870 m/2,854 ft)
  • Gothic Wasserkirche
  • Lindenhofplatz
  • Lake Zurich
  • Kunsthaus
  • Zurichs UNESCO world heritage sites

Urban explorers will love discovering the cobbled streets of the Altstadt (Old Town), home of the Fraumünster Church with its windows by Chagall and Giacometti, the old merchant guildhalls and the 17th century Rathaus (town hall).

If a hike up the Üetliberg at an elevation of approx. 870 m/2,854 ft seems a little extreme, take the train to its summit and enjoy the spectacular panorama view of Zurich or instead head to the elevated area at Lindenhofplatz for glorious views back across the Altstadt.

The Gothic Wasserkirche on the banks of the Limmat River is a small church, which was built in the 13th century. The church was built on a small island of the Limmat but now it’s located on the shore.

Immerse yourself in the pristine waters of Lake Zurich or take a lake cruise to see the city from the water for some excellent Instagram-worthy opportunities to capture the splendor of the Zurich landscape.

If modern art does it for you, don’t miss a visit to the Kunsthaus – Zurich’s revered modern art museum houses some of Europe’s most iconic pieces in its impressive building at Heimplatz 1.

Visit the prehistoric alpine settlements of Grosser Hafner and Kleiner Haffner – UNESCO world heritage sites located just outside Zurich and last inhabited around 7,000 years ago.

Tip for visitors of Zurich

Get around with a Zürich Card – this provides access to local public transportation, offers a host of discounts and other savings on local attractions, restaurants and exhibitions and is available for purchase at Zurich Airport, the central train station and outlets throughout the city.

Dip into the Swiss culinary landscape – more than just cheese fondue

Treat your taste buds to an experience of gastronomic proportions in Zurich, where you’ll find it hard to choose from the multitude of restaurants, cafes and bars offering everything from Michelin-starred dining to traditional Swiss cuisine and international fare. You can find tips for a variety of dining experiences in Zurich  in our Travel Guide.  After dark, let your hair down and dance the night away in “Züri-West”, where you’ll find one of the highest concentrations of nightlife venues in Europe.

The perfect place to start your night might surprise you: the public swimming pools or “badis”. They are a unique Zurich invention. During the day, people take a dip and relax in the sunshine, but as soon as the sun sets, the badis turn into the perfect place to enjoy riverside or lakeside refreshments and people-watch. As a university town, Zurich has a young and active club scene, and countless live music venues and cosy bars to choose from.

Cabaret Voltaire: This artsy lounge and bar is considered by some to be the spiritual home and birthplace of the Dadaism art movement. It was founded in 1916 by Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings as a gathering place for artists and writers to peacefully protest against “the madness of the times”.

Shopping in Zurich

Shop European style ‘til you drop along Langstrasse and the area surrounding Hauptbahnhof (the central train station), where you’ll find retailers of the finest haute couture fashion, souvenirs and cafes for breaks between shopping sessions.

Upmarket department store Grieder is located in the heart of Zurich in a Gothic Revival building at Bahnhofstrasse 30. Offering 3,000 m2 of shopper’s paradise, Grieder is bursting with some of the world’s most coveted luxury brands, high-end homeware and a beauty salon. Drop in to Greiderbar, which serves an all-day lunch.
