When it comes to flying on Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights or on Economy Light fare, you will be allocated a seat automatically during online check-in. We strive to ensure your comfort on board, which is why we make every effort to assign your preferred seat whenever possible. However, for operational reasons, it may be necessary to adjust your seat within the same category.
We have put together a list of frequently asked questions to help you find the answers you are looking for.
If you have booked an Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights or an Economy Light fare, the fare includes an initial automatic seat allocation. You cannot change the seat offered at check-in without additional costs.
If you wish to change your automatic seat allocation, you can make an advance seat reservation for a fee. You can find further information and the current prices on our Advance seat reservations page.
For flights operated by SWISS, you can make an advance seat reservation up to two hours before the scheduled departure time of your flight.
Please note that advance seat reservations cannot be refunded at the airport or on board.
According to the ENAC (Ente Nazionale per l’Aviazione Civile [Italian Civil Aviation Authority]) regulation, you are entitled to a free Classic Seat reservation for flights to and from Italy, provided you meet the following conditions:
- You are travelling with a child between the ages of two and twelve years, and/or
- you are a passenger with a disability or accompanying a passenger with a disability.
The Lufthansa Group offers you the option of adjacent seats at check-in free of charge.
On flights to and from Canada, you can rebook your flight or cancel your trip if we cannot assign your child a seat near an adult in your group.
You can make an advance seat reservation for a fee if:
- you have booked a continental flight;
- your flight is operated by Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian or Brussels Airlines;
- you would like to change the seat offered at check-in at your own request;
- seats are still available on the flight for which you are checking in and
- you are not on a waiting list, have a confirmed booking and are accepted at check-in.
Exceptions:
Passengers who have already purchased a seat reservation in advance can change it free of charge.
With the Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights and on the Light fare, HON Circle Members have the option to select a seat free of charge on short-haul flights during online check-in.
Below, you will find the conditions for changing your advance seat reservation:
- A seat change is possible in Economy Class after payment of a fee.
- The change fee is charged per passenger and flight segment.
- The change fee entitles the passenger to change their seat to a seat that is still available.
- Passengers who are HON Circle Members and booked an Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights or on Light fare can change their initial seat reservation for a fee before online check-in.
- A change fee is payable once per flight segment. Multiple seat changes within one seat category on the same flight segment are permitted.
Please note that the advance seat reservation does not entitle you to a specific selected seat (e.g. seat 3A). It only refers to the selected seat category (e.g. Classic Seat). Your seat may be changed for operational reasons. In such a case, you can change your seat free of charge. A refund due to a seat change is not possible.
