Hand baggage

Everything important on board

Travelling with hand baggage is practical and efficient. On short trips, it enables you to dispense with checked baggage. Please note, though, that there is only limited space on board, and that certain items are not allowed on board.

Hand baggage regulations

  • SWISS Economy
    1 x max. 8 kg Dimensions max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm
  • SWISS Business
    2 x max. 8 kg Dimensions max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm
  • SWISS First
    2 x max. 8 kg Dimensions max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm
  • Your hand luggage must be stored in the overhead locker or under the seat in front. Please observe the maximum permitted dimensions and weight for hand baggage.

Please note that the rules are implemented consistently when boarding. Hand baggage that is too big or too heavy will be taken at the gate and carried as checked baggage, for which there is a charge. These charges are considerably higher at the gate, and can only be paid by Maestro or credit card.

A foldable garment bag with the maximum dimensions of 57 x 54 x 15 cm can also be accepted as hand baggage.

Other permitted items

Adults and children with their own seats may also take the following on board:

  • Handbag, laptop bag or shoulder bag (max. 40 x 30 x 10 cm)
  • Child's seat
  • One pair of crutches, arm or leg splints, other kinds of prostheses
  • Medical equipment

If smaller aircraft are fully booked, we may have to check hand baggage in at the gate. If we do, it will be for your safety and comfort.

Countries such as Italy and the USA have stricter rules regarding hand luggage. Passengers in First and Business Class with a second item of hand luggage must check it in if travelling to those countries.

Special rules apply to hand baggage for flights from and within South Africa. Economy Class passengers may take one item of baggage (maximum circumference 56 x 36 x 23 cm, maximum weight 7 kg) and one thin laptop bag with them. Business and First Class passengers may take two items of baggage (maximum circumference 56 x 36 x 23 cm, maximum weight 7 kg) and one thin laptop bag with them.

Liquids in hand baggage

Liquids taken in hand baggage are subject to special regulations. Gels, creams and lotions are also considered as liquids. Please observe the following restrictions, which apply on all SWISS flights:

  • Liquids must be carried in a container with a maximum capacity of 100 ml
  • These containers must be kept in a resealable transparent plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 litre
  • Only one bag is permitted per person (available from retailers/at the airport)
  • The bag and all the containers in it must be presented completely sealed at the security check

Exceptions: Medication and special foods

Medication: You are permitted to take urgently required medication in liquid form on board with you. However, you may only take the amount that you will require on the flight. We suggest that you carry a medical certificate (in English) for such medication with you.

Special foods: Passengers travelling with small children may carry milk and liquid baby food in their hand baggage. Liquid foods for passengers with allergies (lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance) may also be carried in their hand baggage.

You may carry larger quantities of liquids (maximum 2 litres) in your checked baggage as long as they are not categorised as "Dangerous goods".

Liquid Duty Free items

Liquid Duty Free items must be packaged and sealed properly (as per ICAO rules). The packaging must also contain a proof of purchase. Any items that were bought before the security check and do not comply with the regulations will be confiscated.

Special rules for flights to the USA

Passengers with a connecting flight within the USA must pack these liquid Duty Free items with their checked and registered baggage after landing in the USA.

Forbidden items in hand baggage

For safety reasons, certain items may not be carried in your hand baggage. Forbidden items will be confiscated at the airport security check; no exceptions will be made. This also applies to items purchased earlier at the airport. SWISS accepts no liability for confiscated objects.

Pack any such items in your checked baggage and check it in; then you will avoid annoyance and loss at the security check.
