Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport - T2

Mumbai T2

The new Integrated Terminal 2 (T2) at Chhattrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), Mumbai was inaugurated by India’s Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on 10th Jan 2014. With its magnificent design, art work and world class infrastructure, the new T2 is India’s New Gateway to the World.

Spanning over 4.3 million square feet, the airport’s new terminal T2 is the outcome of GVK’s vision to make CSIA one of the world’s best airports that consistently delights customers and is a pride of Mumbai. T2 is India’s first and most advanced vertical passenger terminal that integrates world class design, architecture, infrastructure and operational efficiency, with a rich infusion of Indian values, heritage and cultural character.

The design of Terminal 2 draws inspiration from India’s National bird – The Peacock. It portrays the magnificent character of the White Peacock, representing flight, as well as rare beauty. The architecture of the new airport terminal quintessentially reflects India’s proud heritage and draws on its rich culture. The T2 is also home to India’s largest public art programme, titled ‘Jaya He’, in the form of a 3 km multi-story Art Wall, illuminated by skylights, that has over 7000 pieces of artwork and artifacts from every region and corner of India.

The art program at T2 is so ambitious in scale and design that it is unlikely that any airport in the world in the 100-year-old history of commercial flight showcases art on this scale. Take the installation at T2's departure area — it occupies 80,000 sq. ft. and curves along the contours of the terminal building and displays a plethora of ancient finds (some date back to the 10th century) like delicately carved windows and doorways, totems, terracotta horses, wooden temple chariots, masks, sculptures of deities etc. All these have been sourced in the last four years from cities, villages, collectors and museums across India.
