Six facts about SWISS WorldCargo: From bears, flowers and chestnuts

SWISS WorldCargo gets the world flying. From live bears and fragrant flowers to valuable classic cars and fresh chestnuts, SWISS's cargo division transports over 300,000 tonnes of goods around the globe every year. Precision, perfect timing and special care are particularly important, whether transporting live animals, perishable goods or sensitive cargo such as art, valuables and medicines.

#1 SWISS WorldCargo in figures

Every year, SWISS WorldCargo transports over 300,000 tonnes of cargo around the globe – a logistical feat. Alongside flowers and live animals, medicines and pharmaceutical products are among the most important shipments, closely followed by valuables such as precious metals and banknotes. Electronics, letters and fresh food are also part of the portfolio.

SWISS WorldCargo’s role in the healthcare sector is particularly impressive: organs, blood plasma and life-saving medicines are reliably transported across continents, often within a matter of hours.

#2 Animal relocation from New Jersey to Zurich

Transporting a bear from the USA to Switzerland is certainly no easy task, but it is one that the SWISS WorldCargo team took on last year. That was when Raymi, a four-year-old bear, set off on his journey. To make this adventure a reality, everything had to be planned down to the last detail beforehand. Raymi’s journey began at the US zoo, where he was transported in a silver container fitted with special air vents. The container, with Raymi inside, weighed a full 255 kilograms.

Today, Raymi lives with his fellow bears at Zurich Zoo.

#3 Floral greetings for Valentine’s Day

Flowers say more than a thousand words and are perfect for expressing love. But have you ever wondered where these floral gifts originally grew? SWISS WorldCargo transports around 990 tonnes of flowers every year. That equates to around 2,200 air freight containers filled with these fragrant treasures.

#4 Four wheels fly to California

SWISS WorldCargo was commissioned to transport a gleaming dark green 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 safely from Zurich to Los Angeles – a cargo you don’t see every day. Particularly exciting: the vehicle was not protected by any additional packaging. Thanks to the precise coordination of more than ten Swissport staff members, the classic car was loaded onto two cargo positions in the hold of a Boeing 777-300ER without a scratch and delivered safely to its destination.

#5 Valuable art on the move

Famous works of art are admired all over the world. However, thanks to travelling exhibitions, art lovers do not always have to travel abroad to see them. SWISS WorldCargo successfully coordinated the transport of over a hundred works by the Swiss artist Paul Klee from Switzerland to Brazil.

#6 Fresh chestnuts for street vendors in New York

During the cold season, the air freight industry also transports goods and products that evoke special emotions and feelings in people. This can include food. After all, what could be better than chestnuts roasted over an open fire that warm your hands at the same time? In New York City, mobile, steaming chestnut roasters can be found on many street corners, forming an important part of the pre-Christmas atmosphere in the ‘Big Apple’.

SWISS WorldCargo has ‘heated up’ the streets of New York with a record-breaking performance. Between October and December 2023, SWISS’s cargo division transported a total of 233,115 kilograms of chestnuts from Italy via Zurich to New York on several flights. More than ever before.
